While watching the great Usain Bolt shatter the 100 meter record at the Track & Field World Championships in Berlin over the weekend, I thought back to the over-the-top adulation and hero worship of Michael Phelps….
Sure, what Phelps accomplished in the Summer Olympics was remarkable, but in my opinion nowhere close to Bolt’s performance. And besides, Phelps is swimming; which is the equivalent of gymnastics, figure skating and soccer….
In other words, real sports fans don’t give a damn….
Bolt, on the other hand, performs in a sport not followed almost exclusively by women, gay men and non-sports fans….
Also, nobody in their right mind would compare Phelps athletically to Bolt….
Usain was clearly the star of the Beiging Olympics, yet it was Phelps who dominated the headlines….
Another reason I preferred Bolt’s accomplishment is the way they hand out gold medals in swimming. You get a gold for the 100 meters, the 102 meters the 104 meters, about 100 different strokes and all of the endless relays….
Since they give away gold medals like carnival prizes, it cheapens the whole thing….
Imagine if they ran Track& Field the same way. Bolt would win Gold for the 100 meters, the 105 meters, the 109 meters and all the relays. Then they could run backwards, skip, run a three-legged race and maybe finish by running down the track with your arms over your head….
If Bolt was playing by the same rules, he would have won at least eight golds….
Unfortunately for him, you have to run real events and earn every medal….
You know who I really feel sorry for? The guy who finishes fourth in the decathlon….
This guy trains for years and years in the toughest event in sports and one day finds himself participating in the Olympics with a chance to fulfill his dream. Over the course of two days, these great athletes participate in 10 different events. To win the gold, you need to be able to run, jump, throw, possess incredible stamina and have an incredible will to win….
Yet even though they participate in 10 events over two days, the winner gets a single gold medal. While the pampered athletes in gymnastics and swimming get a medal every two minutes….
The guy finishing fourth in the decathlon is arguably the fourth best athlete in the Olympics, yet walks away with nothing….
It’s just not right….
I say the rules should be changed and gold medals should be awarded after each event of the decathlon….
Why not? They are 10 unique and different events which require totally different skill sets. You’re telling me an athlete who wins the 110 meter hurdles and then a few minutes later the shot put doesn’t deserve two golds?….
It’s a lot more difficult than winning the 100 meter freestyle and participating in some stupid four-man relay….
My God, Bolt ran a 9.58 100 meters over the weekend, which is the equivalent of hitting 100 home runs or rushing for 3,000 yards….
To put it in perspective, Tyson Gay ran a 9.71, which is the fastest time in American history and the third fastest of all time. And he was blown off the track….
Bolt is the world’s greatest athlete and on the cusp of setting records which will never be approached….
Just imagine if he had a better start off the blocks or actually ran through the finish line….
He could actually get into the 9.4′s, for God’s sake….
Case closed….
