Every time I watch the Chargers play, it amazes me how All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates is always wide open. If I’m an opposing defensive coordinator, the game plan would be taking him away; because none of the San Diego wide outs scare you….
Yet there he is, game after game, running free without a defender within 10 yards….
I know he never played football at Kent St. and was an outstanding basketball player, so you could understand defenders being caught by suprise in his rookie season. But it was quickly evident he was a unique athlete and going to be a star; so obviously defensive coordinators would react accordingly….
But seven years later Gates is still unguarded, running free through the defense and making plays….
Coaches are legendary for working 20 hour days, sleeping at the office and watching film until their eyes bleed; yet in seven years none of them has figured out Gates is really good….
I’d put a spy on him for 60 minutes, and it wouldn’t be a linebacker. A fifth defensive back would be used to shadow him wherever he went on the field….
These dumb-ass coaches have been attmepting to cover him with a linebacker for years and it’s never worked; so maybe it’s time to try something different?….
It’s kind of like my pet peeve, which is poor clock management….
Not a single coach in the NFL understands how to manage the clock and week after week I witness games being lost because of guys in headsets butchering their time outs and the clock….
I’ve always maintained if a coach masters clock management, it would result in an extra three or four wins a year and they could go home at 5 o’clock every day and spend time with their families….
Every team needs to hire a clock management coach, because becoming adept at this is the diffrence between making and not making the playoffs….
But since nobody knows how to do it, I guess it would be difficult finding anyone to hire….
May I volunteer myself as a clock management specialist?
When I read that Cincinnati QB and Heisman candidate Tony Pike “might play” this week against Louisville, my first thought was about how much the game has changed….
Pike broke his left forearm last season and missed two games, so when he reinjured the forearm during Saturday’s win over South Florida, Bearcat faithful were worried he might be lost for the season; thus ending #5 Cincinnati’s dreams of winning the National championship….
But my question is this: Since he throws right handed, why would an injury to his left forearm cause him to miss any time? In fact, why would he miss a down?….
I know the game has changed, but in the old days he would have wrapped the thing up and played….
Call me old fashioned, but since his right arm is fine he should be playing….
Interesting to read that “only” 34% of Californians approve of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s job performance. The way the headline was written implied suprise “only” 34% supported her, but my reaction was shock her numbers were that high….
This dope should have a 0% approval rating, not 34%….
When you look into her eyes, the old expression comes to mind: “There is no there there.”….
Reminds me of former President Bush, whose approval rating was in the low 30′s. Since both liberals and conservatives thought he was incompetent, who on the hell were those approving?….
