COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES

You’d think after getting embarrassed last week in Seattle the USC brain trust would have learned their lesson and opened up the offense; especially with the return of Matt Barkey from his shoulder injury. Sure, Aaron Corp was horses*** last week and thankfully won’t ever see the field again, but the conservative play calling did him no favors against UW….

All week long, Pete Carroll accepted some of the blame for the miserable performance and promised to throw downfield a little more, and in the first quarter he was a man of his word….

Barkley looked sharp, threw two beautiful TD passes and Troy was up 20-0 afer the first 15 minutes…..

After that, however, the brakes were puy on the offense by Carroll and offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates and over the final three quarters the score was 7-7. You read that right, Washington St. played Troy on even terms for the final 45 minutes….

Argualby the worst team in a BCS conference, the Cougars held USC to a measly 156 yards rushing and 27 points; which does not bode well for the rest of the Trojans season….

Another disturbing thing is Washington apparantly isn’t any good, based on their getting thumped 34-14 at Stanford on Saturday….

So UW gets hammered at home by LSU, embarrassed at Stanford and actually wins against USC? Not looking good for Troy to run the table and play for the national championship in January….

I know Cal was destroyed at Oregon, 42-3, but they’re not that bad and were probably caught looking ahead to this week’s game at home against USC. Everyone will be picking the Trojans to bounce back and pound an overrated Golden Bears team, but if Troy continues to play conservatively and depends on the defense to win the game they’re going to leave Josef Stalin Stadium with their second loss of the season….

And Carroll will have a decision to make about Bates….

When I watched Oregon go the entire first half without a first down against Boise St. in their opening game a few weeks ago, I wondered if new coach Chip Kelly might be in over his head….

Since then, however, Kelly has lived up to his reputation as a spread option genius as the Ducks have lit it up. The players are buying into the system, Kelly has made adjustments and Oregon is now a great offensive team….

Jeremiah Masoli, who looked so bad against Boise, was nearly perfect against Cal and looked as though he’d been running this offense for years….

The balance between run and pass, combined with creative play calling and the option, iis fun to watch and USC is in deep trouble when they travel to Eugene later this season….

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; they’re not going to win this weekend on Karl Marx Field if they don’t produce mor eoffense and take some chances downfield….

Can you imagine the scene in Berkley if the Bears defeat USC?….

The communists up there will celebrate as if Lenin and Stalin came back to life and were back in power….

Who knows, maybe the party up there will spread all the way to their bosses in Moscow and Red Square will be rocking….

WEEKEND NOTES

With the newspaper business dying and the industry unable to break news, it’s fascinating to see the desperation in which the old school media attempts to sell papers and stay alive….

A few weeks ago, the Los Angeles Times “broke” a story about USC football coach/consultant Pete Rodriguez allegedly acting as a coach for Trojan players, thus violating some NCAA rule about going over the number of paid assistants you can have….

Not only was this story in that paper, but on Page 1….

Either it was a slow news day or the Times is desperately attempting to create news and sell papers….

To me, the whole controversy is absurd and a minor infraction, but the Times trumpeted this thing as some violation which might bring down the Trojan football program….

Evidently, Rodriguez is a long time NFL assistant, a friend of Pete Carroll and a very good coach. So Pete brings him in as a “consultant,” not one of the nine assistants the NCAA allows. But Rodriguez evidently coached the players and participated in practices, which I guess is against the rules….

But Page 1 of the Los Angeles Times? This one wasn’t even worthy of Page 1 of the sports section….

Since the Times is going out of business and will probably be out of print in a year or two, I guess they feel they need screaming headlines and National Enquirer type stuff to stay afloat….

Reminds me of the steroids in baseball baloney that keeps getting released….

In my opinion, the media types have all 103 names on that list, yet choose to release them one at a time, at about one month intervals, so they can whet the public appetite and sell papers….

After all, if they released them all at once, it would be a huge story and then die down in a week or two. But this way, they can attempt to keep the story alive and attempt to save circulation and daily sales….

It won’t work, of course, because in this new age of instant information they are always going to be a day late….

Breaking news pops up on the internet a few minutes after it happens and most if us know the story long before the daily paper comes out in the morning….

But if they hold onto stories, refuse to release names and hide infomation, they can stay on top of things and remain on life support a little longer….

Kind of like the band continuing to play while the Ttanic sank….

By the way, how ridiculous is this David Ortiz explanation about his positive test? Just like all the others, he’s claiming he had no idea how he tested positive and it must have been some over the counter supplement or vitamin he ingested….

All this does is insult the intelligence of the public and make thingd worse for Big Papi….

I guess he wasn’t paying attention when Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmiero and the rest lied and made things worse for themselves….

The first guy who comes out and admits what he did will be forgiven and consideed a hero….

Here’s what Ortiz should have said: “First of all, the test is correct and I used performance enhancing drugs to imporve my performance. I take full responsibility and apologize to my teammates and the fans. I was geting a little older, my body was breaking down and I made the foolish decision to use steroids to stay on the field and help my teammates. I felt guilty and like I was stealing my paycheck by sitting on the bench with nagging injuries, so I used steroids to heal more quickly and earn my money.”….

A little honesty and people would forgive him….
