Clock management, clock management, clock management….
With the Jets trailing the Steelers 24-19 and 3:06 remaining, New York lined up for a kickoff and there was only one option: Try an onside kick and play to win: Because the alternative was watching Pittsburgh go into their victory formation and run out the clock….
As I saw the Jets kick deep, I wrote down on my notepad, “Game over.”….
No QB in the NFL is better at extending plays and converting 3rd downs than Ben Roethlisberger, so I’ll be damned if I’m going to give him the ball with a chance to run out the clock….
Two 1st downs ends the game and we’ve worked too hard and made too good a comeback in this game ot wave the white flag….
At least that’s what I’m thinking if I’m Ryan….
Clock management, clock management, clock management….
As a coach you have to be aware who’s standing on the other sideline, how much time is left and plan accordingly. Sure, if Alex Smith or Jimmy Clausen is the opposing QB, then you probably kick deep and take your chances….
But if it’s Roethlisberger, there’s no way in hell I’m giving him the ball. I onside kick and even if I don’t recover the situation remains the same: Three time outs remaining and the two-minute warning. Then you pray your defense can make a stop….
But I’ll face that situation only if I fail on the onside kick. The first priority is playing to win and getting the ball for one last try for the Super Bowl….
To kick deep and allow Big Ben to work his magic is inexplicable….
Then, of course, the Jets kicked deep, Roethlisberger made two first downs and knelt down three times as the clock ran out….
Unbelievable….
There’s no sugar coating this one: Rex Ryan’s decision was cowardly, nonsensicle, stupid and he owes his players, fans and owners an apology….
Once again, my pet peeve costs another coach a huge game….
Clock management, clock management, clock management….
I still can’t believe Jay Cutler didn’t stay on the field and finish the game in the Bears 21-14 loss to the Packers….
So what if his knee hurt? Wrap the damn thing up, get a pain killing injection at halftime and get your ass back on the field….
He was walking around the sidleines without a limp and had a whole city depending on him….
Unless it was life threatening or the leg was going to be amputated, there was no excuse for not being on the field….
Another huge issue was Cutler’s body language throughout the first half. When his team needed him most, he looked like a whiny little baby every time he came off the field….
With his team losing 14-0 and the season slipping away, Cutler needed to be a tough leader: Yell at your teammates, make plays and tell the trainer to go f*** himself whenever he wanted to look at your knee….
Instead, he stared at his feet, slinked off the field and sent a clear message he didn’t want to play….
Because of this, the Bears had to play a 3rd string QB in the 4th quarter, who actually threw two TD passes and rallied the team; something Cutler should have been doing….
The latest reports say Cutler might have a torn ACL or MCL, but who cares? Broken legs didn’t stop Terrell Owens and Jack Youngblood from participating in playoff and Super Bowl games….
Unless they were sawing off his leg in the locker room or giving him his last rites, he needed to play….
One time Ronnie Lott told the team doctor to cut off his pinky rather than miss the second half of a regular season game….
So don’t tell me about injured knees….
So sorry to hear Jack La Lane passed away at the age of 96….
The first job I ever had, while still in high school, was working for him and he was an inspiration. On his 65th birthday, while shackled and chained, he pulled 65 boats, all with 65 lbs. of weight, to Alcatraz and back….
On his 75th birthday, again shackled and chained, he pulled 75 boats, all with 75 lbs. of weight, for 1.5 miles in the Long Beach harbor….
Every morning at 6AM, he worked out religiously for two hours at his Morro Bay home….
Even this week, while feeling the effesct of pneumonia, he was working out in the morning. Sadly, the pneumonia overcame him and he passed away on Sunday morning….
But 96 is a hell of a run, especially when you’re ridiculously healthy until the end….
He was a great man and it was my pleasure to work for and know him…..
R.I.P. Jack and all the best to you and your family….
I’m sure he’s already in heaven organizing workouts for everyone….
