Since I haven’t watched a second of college basketball this season and couldn’t name one player on any of the teams, I couldn’t wait to fill out my bracket. Because in my experience it’s the people who know absolutely nothing about the NCAA Tournament who usually win….
Several years ago, when I was doing a drive time show for 1540 The Ticket in Los Angeles, we had our annual bracket contest, with the winner getting $300. And in the end, it was my wife who took home the prize….
This was a person who had never watched a college basketball game in her life, yet won the pool by picking longshot Georgia Tech to make the Final Four….
If I remember correctly, the Yellow Jackets were a #8 seed and nobody in our pool had them going that far….
When it got down to the Elite Eight, the guy running the pool told me if Georgia Tech won their next game, my wife would clinch victory and the resulting $300….
Of course the Yellow Jackets won their next game and the $300 was hers. But when I asked her why she had Georgia Tech in the Final Four, she replied, “Because bumble bees are so cute.”….
That sums it up about as well as anything….
This year it was me who was the ignorant one, having not seen a game all year….
After reading a little about the teams, I came to the conclusion that Gonzaga was vastly overrated as a #1 seed and Oregon was vastly underrated as a #12….
I know the Zags had a great record and ranked #1, but I also know they play in a horses*** conference and aren’t challenged the way other top teams are. I also noted Gonzaga’s strength of schedule was #97; by far the worst of the highly seeded teams….
So I picked the Ducks to get to the Final Four and the Zags to lose in the first weekend….
After almost losing to #16 Southern in the first round, the Gonzaga got bounced in the second round by Wichita St, meaning I was in business with my pool….
And with Oregon getting to the Sweet 16, I’m one win away from taking this pool by the nuts and winning first place money….
If the Ducks beat Louisville on Friday, I think the cash is mine….
Unfortunately, Louisville is probably the best team in the country and this ain’t going to be easy. But Oregon is playing extremely well and this tournament is one-and-done….
So there’s no reason the Ducks can’t keep this run going….
Before the Gonzaga-Wichita St. game, the announcers kept talking about how good the Zags Kelly Olynyk was and how he was going to be an excellent NBA player….
But after watching him for 40 minutes against the Wheat Shockers, I have a different word to describe him….
Stiff….
Yes, he’s 7′ tall and looks like a pretty good athlete with the way he can run, but he received a hard lesson about what life in the NBA is going to be like. He got pushed around by Wichita’s big men, had trouble getting a shot off and looked like Spanky Walton the way the Shockers were spiking his shots….
Olynyk is really soft and certainly not going to make an impact on the next level….
And a lot of that has to do with the high school conference Gonzaga plays in….
So my master plan of Gonzaga making an early exit and Oregon making a run is working like a charm….
And all from a guy who knows absolutely nothing about 2012-13 college basketball….
But those Ducks are so cute….
Another guy the studio analysts and announcers were raving about was Creighton’s Doug McDermott; evidently a big time scorer and elite player….
But in the first half it became evident this McDermott guy was another stiff; slow footed, lumbering and easy to defend….
He wound up shooting 4-14 against Duke’s pressure defense and had all kinds of trouble getting his shot off. If he didn’t get his shot spanked around the rim, he was dribbling into double teams and making poor decisions….
Another guy who got exposed as someone who is going to have major problems on the next level….
On a positive note, how much fun is this great run by Florida Gulf Shore? Unlike most of the other teams, whose control-freak coaches walk the ball up the floor, call plays on every possession and refuse to fast break; the Eagles run, gun, throw lob passes and are a joy to watch….
They are a shining example of what can happen if the coach simply gets out of the way and allows his kids to have fun….
FGCU Coach Andy Enfield is suddenly a hot commodity and hopefully every Division I program in America will follow his lead and take the brakes off their players….
Enfield also has a supermodel wife and made a bundle on Wall St, so he is currently living the life….
I also found it ironic that the #15 seed FGCU bounced #2 Georgetown in the first round….
Back in the day, John Thompson had a reputation of not recruiting white players; which seemed valid since he never had one….
Oh sure, Thompson always had a token white guy way down on the end of the bench who never played; but in all his years of coaching I can’t remember him ever giving one of them significant minutes….
So to see white Eagles center Chase Fieler dunking all over the Georgetown players for 40 minutes, including several spectacular lob dunks, was very entertaining….
The Eagles point guard, Brett Comer, is another white kid and he totally controlled the game; dribbling all over the Hoyas, making great decisions and the guy throwing the beautiful lobs to the sky walking Fieler….
And how interesting that Thompson was calling the game courtside for ESPN radio and his son, John Thompson III, is the current Hoyas coach….
When Danny Ferry was a senior at De Matha High School in Washington D.C., he was considered the #1 high school player in the country and heavily recruited by every Division I school….
Except one….
Even though his high school was in the same city as Georgetown and only a few miles away, Thompson was the only coach who didn’t recruit him….
And Ferry was quoted as saying that not only did Georgetown not recruit him, he never heard a word from them….
So why wouldn’t Thompson recruit a 6’10″ high school superstar who played in the same city? You can draw your own conclusions….
Anyway, it was fascinating to see Comer and Fieler dominating the Hoyas in front of Big John Thompson….
Thinking about all this, the world must be coming to an end. Because if white guys are dominating basketball and boxing, the end times must be near….
