WEEKEND NOTES

Since I haven’t watched a second of college basketball this season and couldn’t name one player on any of the teams, I couldn’t wait to fill out my bracket. Because in my experience it’s the people who know absolutely nothing about the NCAA Tournament who usually win….

Several years ago, when I was doing a drive time show for 1540 The Ticket in Los Angeles, we had our annual bracket contest, with the winner getting $300. And in the end, it was my wife who took home the prize….

This was a person who had never watched a college basketball game in her life, yet won the pool by picking longshot Georgia Tech to make the Final Four….

If I remember correctly, the Yellow Jackets were a #8 seed and nobody in our pool had them going that far….

When it got down to the Elite Eight, the guy running the pool told me if Georgia Tech won their next game, my wife would clinch victory and the resulting $300….

Of course the Yellow Jackets won their next game and the $300 was hers. But when I asked her why she had Georgia Tech in the Final Four, she replied, “Because bumble bees are so cute.”….

That sums it up about as well as anything….

This year it was me who was the ignorant one, having not seen a game all year….

After reading a little about the teams, I came to the conclusion that Gonzaga was vastly overrated as a #1 seed and Oregon was vastly underrated as a #12….

I know the Zags had a great record and ranked #1, but I also know they play in a horses*** conference and aren’t challenged the way other top teams are. I also noted Gonzaga’s strength of schedule was #97; by far the worst of the highly seeded teams….

So I picked the Ducks to get to the Final Four and the Zags to lose in the first weekend….

After almost losing to #16 Southern in the first round, the Gonzaga got bounced in the second round by Wichita St, meaning I was in business with my pool….

And with Oregon getting to the Sweet 16, I’m one win away from taking this pool by the nuts and winning first place money….

If the Ducks beat Louisville on Friday, I think the cash is mine….

Unfortunately, Louisville is probably the best team in the country and this ain’t going to be easy. But Oregon is playing extremely well and this tournament is one-and-done….

So there’s no reason the Ducks can’t keep this run going….

Before the Gonzaga-Wichita St. game, the announcers kept talking about how good the Zags Kelly Olynyk was and how he was going to be an excellent NBA player….

But after watching him for 40 minutes against the Wheat Shockers, I have a different word to describe him….

Stiff….

Yes, he’s 7′ tall and looks like a pretty good athlete with the way he can run, but he received a hard lesson about what life in the NBA is going to be like. He got pushed around by Wichita’s big men, had trouble getting a shot off and looked like Spanky Walton the way the Shockers were spiking his shots….

Olynyk is really soft and certainly not going to make an impact on the next level….

And a lot of that has to do with the high school conference Gonzaga plays in….

So my master plan of Gonzaga making an early exit and Oregon making a run is working like a charm….

And all from a guy who knows absolutely nothing about 2012-13 college basketball….

But those Ducks are so cute….

Another guy the studio analysts and announcers were raving about was Creighton’s Doug McDermott; evidently a big time scorer and elite player….

But in the first half it became evident this McDermott guy was another stiff; slow footed, lumbering and easy to defend….

He wound up shooting 4-14 against Duke’s pressure defense and had all kinds of trouble getting his shot off. If he didn’t get his shot spanked around the rim, he was dribbling into double teams and making poor decisions….

Another guy who got exposed as someone who is going to have major problems on the next level….

On a positive note, how much fun is this great run by Florida Gulf Shore? Unlike most of the other teams, whose control-freak coaches walk the ball up the floor, call plays on every possession and refuse to fast break; the Eagles run, gun, throw lob passes and are a joy to watch….

They are a shining example of what can happen if the coach simply gets out of the way and allows his kids to have fun….

FGCU Coach Andy Enfield is suddenly a hot commodity and hopefully every Division I program in America will follow his lead and take the brakes off their players….

Enfield also has a supermodel wife and made a bundle on Wall St, so he is currently living the life….

I also found it ironic that the #15 seed FGCU bounced #2 Georgetown in the first round….

Back in the day, John Thompson had a reputation of not recruiting white players; which seemed valid since he never had one….

Oh sure, Thompson always had a token white guy way down on the end of the bench who never played; but in all his years of coaching I can’t remember him ever giving one of them significant minutes….

So to see white Eagles center Chase Fieler dunking all over the Georgetown players for 40 minutes, including several spectacular lob dunks, was very entertaining….

The Eagles point guard, Brett Comer, is another white kid and he totally controlled the game; dribbling all over the Hoyas, making great decisions and the guy throwing the beautiful lobs to the sky walking Fieler….

And how interesting that Thompson was calling the game courtside for ESPN radio and his son, John Thompson III, is the current Hoyas coach….

When Danny Ferry was a senior at De Matha High School in Washington D.C., he was considered the #1 high school player in the country and heavily recruited by every Division I school….

Except one….

Even though his high school was in the same city as Georgetown and only a few miles away, Thompson was the only coach who didn’t recruit him….

And Ferry was quoted as saying that not only did Georgetown not recruit him, he never heard a word from them….

So why wouldn’t Thompson recruit a 6’10″ high school superstar who played in the same city? You can draw your own conclusions….

Anyway, it was fascinating to see Comer and Fieler dominating the Hoyas in front of Big John Thompson….

Thinking about all this, the world must be coming to an end. Because if white guys are dominating basketball and boxing, the end times must be near….

WEEKEND NOTES

With David Stern’s stupid one-and-done rule ruining college basketball, it should come as no suprise that teams like Virginia Commonwealth and Butler are in the Final Four. With all the good players little more than mercinaries and running to the NBA after a year, the elite programs have to scramble every year to bring several more one-season blue chippers….

Meanwhile, teams like VCU, Butler, George Mason, Gonzaga, etc, have teams comprised mostly of seniors; meaning they know how to play together and mature….

As long as Stern’s silly rules stays in place, the mid-majors are going to continue making historic runs….

It’s great to see these Cinderallas in the Tournament, but if the power teams kept players more than a year teams like VCU and Butler would never make it this far….

A team of Seniors who know how to play together are going to give a team of talented Freshmen a difficult time….

So VCU and Butler owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to David Stern….

All that being said, it’s incredible that Butler has made the Final Four two straight years….

Because of VCU’s great run the Bulldogs are getting overlooked, but a small team from a small conference doing this two straight years, especially when they lost their best player to the NBA lottery, is unheard of….

If either VCU or Butler wins this thing, a Hollywood movie will soon follow….

The night the field was announced, ESPN’s panel of “experts” all ripped the committee for including VCU and unanimously agreed they didn’t belong….

Duke Vitale, Digger Phelps and Jay Bilas all ripped VCU, with Bilas even saying “Do these guys on the committee even know the ball is round?”….

Who’s laughing now?….

With the division completely off the radar, it’s been interesting to watch Baltimore Ravens safety Tom Zbigokowski fight as a heavyweight….

After two 1st round KO’s over a couple of stiffs, Tommy Z was actually challenged Saturday night and had to fight hard to win a four round decision over Caleb Grummet….

Unlike Tommy Z’s previous foes, Grummet was in good shape, fought hard and hurt Zbigokowski in the final round with a good right cross….

“Thank God it wasn’t a six round fight,” said Emanuel Steward, who worked Tommy Z’s corner. “He needs to come with me and do some serious boxing training.”….

In Tom’s defense, he was fighting at Cruiserweight and gave away 20 lbs. to Grummet. But still, he ran out of gas in the third round and was lucky to win….

It will be interesting to see how serious the Z Man is about boxing and if he’ll stick with it once the lockout ends….

He has skills and was 75-15 as an amateur; which shows he’s not some football player doing this as a lark. He really is a fighter and hopefully gets into top shape and brings some interest back to the heavyweight division….

Floyd Mayweather won’t fight Manny Pacquiao for $50M, but seems to be trying to make up for it through heavy gambling….

The Pretty Boy bragged over the weekend that he won over $100K betting on basketball and tweeted “betting on my lil brother Derrick Rose will get you paid.”….

To remove all doubt, Floyd posted a picture of his winning ticket on twitter….

I guess it beats getting hit in the face, but for God’s sake how can anyone turn down $50M?….

I’ve said repeatedly that Mayweather will defeat Pacman easily, delivering a boxing lesson obver 12 rounds and possibly knocking him out late….

But the longer the Pretty Boy waits, the more the advantage goes to Manny….

He’s not getting any younger and turned 34 on February 24th. He’s also fought only once in the past 18 months and twice in the last 40 months….

Meanwhile Pacman has been fighting regularly against top-notch competition and getting bigger and stronger every fight….

Floyd needs to sign for the Pacquiao fight and take at least one tune up before Manny….

If I were his manager, he’d fight three times before Pacman, because at his age he needs to shake off the ring rust and be at 100%….

NOTES ON A SCORECARD

I tried to watch the USC-VCU game last night, but after the first five minutes I switched to “Oz,” the great prison show produced by HBO….

In the first 5M, there were already two time outs and the referees were blowing their whistles as if they were getting paid by the foul….

Between the officials, the time outs and not knowing a single player on the floor, I was gone….

A few hours later, while Vern Schillinger and his Aryan Brotherhood friends were gang raping a new pragg on “Oz,” I switched back to the game….

There was a minute and a half left, Troy was down by 11 and coach Kevin O’Neill was frantically waving his arms and telling his players not to foul….

In all my years of watching March Madness, I’d never seen a coach throw up the white flag and quit so early….

Yes, there was little chance of USC winning the game, but it was certainly no time to give up. With the 3-point shot and lots of fouls to give, they could have extended the game and made a last run….

Instead, their coach literally quit on his players and he won’t have a job in a day or two….

But the bigger question is this: Why was O’Neill hired by USC in the first place?….

He’s always been a pretty good coach and recruiter, but rubs people the wrong way and has a filthy mouth. Everywhere he’s been, O’Neill has had ugly confrontations, displayed an obnoxious personality and offended people with his gutter language….

Evidently this escaped the attention of the USC athletic director and university president….

After the hirings of Lane Kiffin and O’Neill, people from USC’s administration should be walking the plank with them….

This one is shocking even for Donald T. Sterling….

During Elgin Baylor’s wrongful termination lawsuit against the Clipeprs, The Donald actually got on the stand and claimed he didn’t know about Baylor’s Hall-of-Fame career….

If I were the judge I would have arrested Donald T. on the spot for perjury….

An owner of a Los Angeles basketball team doesn’t know that the GM he hired was one of the greatest players of all time in his own city?….

Is there such a thing as grand perjury or perjury with special circumstances? If not, there should be in this case….

I think people are making way too much about Jalen Rose and Jimmy King’s comments regarding Grant Hill and the early 1990′s Duke teams….

Rose said the other day that he and his Michigan teammates “hated Duke with a passion,” considered black Duke players “uncle toms” and that Duke “never recruited guys like me.”….

King was quoted as saying he thought Bobby Hurley and Christian Laettner were “soft bitches” and also labeled Hill as “a bitch.”….

The key to this is both Rose and King used these phrases in the past tense; meaning they thought this way when they were 17 and 18 years old. It’s still wrong and reprehensible; but the comments of two stupid kids….

And it’s also grossly unfair to Hill, who might be the classiest professional athlete I’ve ever come across….

There’s also this: A lot of black people hate Duke….

Over the past 20 years, I have never met a black Duke fan. From friends, guys at the gym and people on the street, I’ve never heard a positive word about them….

Hell, I’m a goofy-looking white guy and I can’t stand Duke, either….

In my opinion the referees bend over backward to help the Dookies win games and they’ve been the beneficiary of more gift wins from the officials since the days of UCLA and John Wooden….

Not only that; ESPN, Duke Vitale and the rest have their heads so far up Coach K’s keister they could give him a colonoscopy….

I’m sure Coach K. bends and breaks the rules just like everyone else and the word is most of his players are safely in soft majors with professors in the bag….

Coach K. also has a sewer mouth, which I’ve personally heard sitting behind the Duke bench. His salty language rivals anyone I’ve ever heard….

Plus, they win so much that people are bound to dislike them….

But let’s be honest about this; Duke is the Boston Celtics of college basketball, meaning they have too many white guys and black fans are not going to like them….

It was the same back in the Larry Bird/Celtics days. Whenever I’d ask someone why they hated Boston so much, they’d invariably say “Too many white boys.”….

Hey I hated the Celtics and still do, but not for that reason….

It was the same thing with the Laettner-Hurley teams: “Too many white boys.”….

So it’s understandable that a group of talented Freshman at Michigan in the early 1990′s, unrecruited by Duke, would feel their players were soft, white and priveledged….

But the bottom line is Hill and Duke went 4-0 against the Fab Five, including a 20-point hammering in the 1991 NCAA Championship game….

And it must have been the ultimate humiliation for the Fab Five to be taken to the woodshed four straight times by “bitches” and uncls toms.”….

WEEKEND NOTES

Not too long ago, I was a huge college basketball fan and couldn’t wait for March Madness. From the top seeds to the sleepers, I’d seen them all, could name most of the players and looked forward to the NCAA Tournament more than any other sporting event….

Knowing this, it’s hard to believe that in 2011 I couldn’t care less and haven’t watched a full college game in two years. If someone would have told me this 10 years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it….

There’s lots of reasons I’ve lost interest, with the horrendous officiating and endless commercials near the top of the list….

But the biggest reason I don’t watch anymore is David Stern’s ridiculous one-and-done rule; which ensures the top players will not be around after their Freshman season….

Back in the day you could follow a player through his college career and look forward to his school building around him and making Final Four runs….

Now, you have a group of super talented, undisciplined players who are only in college because they were forced by this absurd rule….

It’s created rent-a-players with no need to attend class, listen to their coaches or develop any allegiance to their fans or schools….

After attending class for one semester, these guys immediately drop out after the season ends, never to be seen again….

Even before the one-and-done nonsense, I was growing frustrated with referees deciding games instead of the players and superior teams losing because of criminally poor officiating….

There was also no flow to the games, thanks to the greed of the NCAA and network television….

Not only did the coaches get six time outs each, there were mandatory television time outs at 16, 12, 8 and four minutes in each half. Which means when you combine the coaches and TV timeouts, we were forced to endure 20 five minute breaks per game; which by my high school math equals 100 minutes….

Add to this the zebras constantly blowing their whistles and stopping the action and you had unwatchable basketball….

And with no flow to the games, constant time outs and contstand whistles, I had about had it….

So when David Stern instituted his racist, imbecilic rule, that was all for me….

I don’t know if Tom Zbikowski will be a good heavyweight fighter, but it’s great to see him in the ring and creating some buzz about the sport….

The former Notre Dame and current Baltiomre Ravens safety had his second professional fight Saturday night, on the undercard of Ricardo Mayorga-Miguel Cotto….

And just like his debut in 2006, the Z-Man scored a quick first round knockout….

This is no joke for Zbikowski, who was 75-15 as an amateur and loves the sport. He’s going to fight again on March 26 and I’ll be watching….

Granted, he’s fought two stiffs, but his technique looks good and he has some thunder in his punches. He’s not ready for the Klitschkos, but hopefully is serious about sticking with boxing….

Hell, he made $50,000 for two minutes of work on Saturday, so he’s found a way to survive the lockout….

Every time I read about Kevin Love “breaking the NBA record” with his 53rd consecutive triple-double, I laugh uproariously….

And Wilt Chamberlain must be doing cartwheels in his grave….

I interviewed Wilt once and he told me if he didn’t have a double-double by halftime, the reporters would accuse him of loafing….

I’ll bet if you looked at the old box scores of Wilt, you’d probably see seasons of double-doubles, not 53 straight games….

Hell, one year he averaged 50 points and 27 rebounds. So 53 straight games is “an NBA record?”….

Hit the laugh track….

NOTES ON A SCORECARD

The story of the Tournament so far is Cornell, who have somehow managed to reach the Sweet 16, even though the school does not offer athletic scholarships….

In their first two games, against favored Temple and Wisconsin, the Big Red systematicaly took apart their more talented foes with unselfishness, great outside shooting and excellent defense….

Unlike the old Princeton teams, which threw a scare into #1 seed Georgetown and upset defending NCAA champion UCLA years ago, this Ivy League team has talent and can lock you down defensively….

They are extremely well coached, experienced, know how to play together and fully capable of defeating #1 seed Kentucky on Thursday night….

Sure, the Wildcats are more talented and capable of a blowout win; but a team of Seniors almost always has an advantage over a team of Freshman….

Cornell has eight Seniors, play beautifully together and know how to get the ball to the right players in the best position to score. Also, all of them can shoot and they have a seven footer who can play….

If Cornell hangs in there, those kids playing for Kentucky are going to tighten up and find a way to lose. They’ve had two blowout wins so far, but against these guys are going to have to play at their best to win….

The Big Red also scored 87 points against Wisconsin, which is another reason not to compare them to the typical Ivy League team. They don’t run the weave for 30 seconds and lok for a backdoor cut; they run their offense and attack. On defense, they don’t pack in a 2-3 zone and hope their more talented opponent has a cold shooting night….

They play teams straight up, play man-to-man defense, attack the basket and so far have controlled their opponents….

There is no doubt Kentucky has more talent and should win, but this is a one-and-done tournament and I don’t trust a team of talented Freshman against an experienced group of seniors….

Oh, and another thing: One thing I trust less than Freshmen are referees and I have a feeling UK is going to be the beneficiary of a lot of whistles. Traditionally, teams like Kentucky get the majority of calls and unfortunately this game will not be different….

By the way, has there ever been such a contrast in two Sweet 16 opponents?….

Kentucky has a history of cheating, low academic standards and has a sleazy coach who has a history of violating NCAA rules and leaving his school holding the bag while he runs to his next job….

The Wildcats also have a core group of rent-a-players who are only in college because of David Stern’s one-year-in-school rule….

All of them will drop out of school as soon as their NCAA Tournament run ends and Lexington will never see them again….

They have about as much business in college as Dave Smith….

Everything people say is wrong with colege basketball is encompassed in the Kentucky program….

On the other hand, Cornell does not grant athletic scholarships, has real students on the floor and does things the right way….

Their players actually want to be in college, enjoy the experience, stay out of trouble and will earn their degrees. They will be Cornell Big Red for life and proud of it….

They are not rented mercinaries….

In a perfect world, Cornell wins and shows you can do things the right way and succeed….

And if Cornell wins, the sky is the limit and they will have as good a chance as any to win the National Championship….

And if that happens, it will be the greatest story in college sports history. Movies will be made, songs will be written and this team will be immortalized….

Prediction: I like Cornell to pull off another upset….
