NOTES ON A SCORECARD

As Adam Scott was walking up the 18th fairway on Sunday, with the tournament at Firestone well in hand, the fans started chanting someone’s name. No, it wasn’t Scott, who had a four shot lead, it was his caddie….

As the chants of “Ste-vie Williams!” “Ste-vie Williams!” grew louder and louder, I knew we were witnessing history: Never before and probably never again will we hear a caddie’s name chanted after a big win….

But it was nice to see the crowd acknowledge Williams, who was treated like s*** by Tiger after showing him nothing but loyalty and friendship over their 13 years together….

Afterwards, Williams called Tiger a liar for saying he was fired face-to-face, saying it was done over the phone. He then said he was “shocked” he got the boot and felt he got “short shrifted.”….

But the bottom line is Scott won $1.4M, meaning Stevie pocketed a cool $140,000; a lot more than he would have made with Tiger, who finished tied for 37th, 18 shots back….

But El Tigre showed signs of life this week, hit the ball well and I believe he’s going to reach the top again once he starts playing regularly and gets his putting right….

But it serves him right to hear the fans chant Williams name after the way he treated his so-called friend….

I never thought a caddie made much of a diffrence, but evidently Williams is legendary for his meticulous notes, study time and knowledge of weather and the greens…..

It also helps when they lie to the media and pull a Sgt. Schultz when asked questions about the boss cheating on his wife. Whenever Williams was asked about Tiger’s infidelities, his answer was always the same: “I know nothing, I hear nothing, I see nothing!”….

If I were Tiger, I’d have given Stevi a lifetime contract, for fear he’d start telling the truth about what he’d seen and heard….

The PGA Championship in a few weeks should be very interesting….

I’M NOT BUYING IT

Back in 1998, when Randy Moss was a rookie with the Vikings, I thought he was going to be the greatest wide receiver in the history of the NFL….

Yes, even better than Jerry Rice….

He was 6’5″, had sprinter’s speed, a 40″ vertical jump and the best set of hands I’d ever seen. Not only could he make all the catches, he could also stick one hand in the air and spear the ball like he had glue on his fingers….

And if he was double or triple teamed? Who cares? Just throw the ball as far downfield as far you can, even if he’s covered, and two or three times a game he’d outjump everyone and make the play….

I’d never seen anyone like him and to this day I hold the same opinion….

Yes, he had more natural talent and athletic ability than Rice, but unfortunately did not possess the work ethic or drive to be the best….

Which is why nobody in their right mind will ever place him ahead of Jerry on the all-time greats list….

But there’s never been a player as talented or fun to watch as Moss….

A few weeks ago, his agent announced Randy was “in freaky shape” and “better than he’s ever been.” There were rumors about him signing with the Jets and I begged the 49ers to offer him a contract….

So when I heard he was retring, I didn’t believe it and still don’t….

There’s no way someone as young and talented as Moss is going to walk away from all those millions and I’ll bet he’s back for Week One….

I just hope he’s wearing a San Francisco uniform….

At 34, he’s still in his prime and in my opinion can be as good as ever in the right situation. Because of his unwillingness to bl;ock or run crossing pattenrs, he hasn’t taken a lot of bit hits or had a lot of wear and tear….

He’s also had a couple of years off: Last season and his time with the Raiders….

So he’s a lot oyunger than his years and probabkly as fast and dangerous as ever….

If I were the Patriots, I’d bring him back; because he was very happy in New England and the Pats desperately missed his ability to stretch the field after he was gone….
